The development of tourism has fostered the overall growth of the country's economy. It has created direct and indirect employment and income generation opportunities in other related industries. The first tourist resorts were opened in 1972 with Bandos island resort and Kurumba Village.

The number of resorts has increased from 2 to 92 between 1972 and 2007. As of 2007, over 8,380,000 tourists had visited Maldives.

Pink Sands Beach

Most of the Bahamas beaches have white or golden sand, but this beach on Harbor Island boasts sand in the soft hue of pink. Consistently appearing on lists of the top beaches, this quiet stretch of sand is known and loved for its natural beauty. The pink sand nicely contrasts with the brilliantly blue skies, the clear blue waters, and the green of the palm trees. Pink Sands Beach Bahamas is worth a visit even if you’re not planning on swimming.

Pink Sands Beach in Harbour Island, Bahamas is known throughout the world as one of the best beaches on the planet. The Travel Channel, Conde Nast and other premier travel guides have placed this beach in their top list of beaches.

The color of Pink Sands Beach comes from the reddish pink shells of microscopic coral insects called Foraminifera. When these insects die, they leave behind their shells. Their shells are then crushed by the waves and brought to the shore to mix in with the sand, thus giving Pink Sand Beach its lovely hue. It is not just the color of the sand in Pink Sands Beach that makes it so famous. Tourists also love this beach for its gentle waves and calm waters.

Snorkeling and swimming are made safe and easy by outlying reefs, which provide large areas of relatively calm and shallow waters. Horseback riding on Pink Sands Beach is a popular activity for honeymooners.

Whitehaven Beach is known for its white sands. The sand consists of 98% pure silica which gives it a bright white color. At the northern end of Whitehaven Beach is Hill Inlet, a stunning cove where the tide shifts the sand and water to create a beautiful fusion of colours.

With its pristine, extremely white powdery sand and its different levels of depth, it offers a fusion of colours that is just amazing from the brightest white to the darkest blue, through all the tones of blue, green and turquoise, the scenery is stunning. Local rocks do not contain silica so it has been suggested that the sands were brought to the beach via prevailing sea currents over millions of years.

Whitehaven is perfect for swimming, snorkelling and scuba diving. Whitehaven Beach is also really popular for windsurf and kitesurf due to the wind, which is particularly appropriate for those kinds of sports.

Atlântica is closed for traffic; Then you have people on bicycles, skateboards, rollerblades, joggers all taking advantage of that beautiful beach walk.

The night is one of the best times to appreciate Copacabana Beach. To sit at a quiosque with a Caipirinha in the evening is definitely something you should try. A good advise is to pick a table a little bit back from the stream of people passing by; By doing that you will avoid that almost endless stream of beggars, vendors and weirdos.

All in all, just being on Copacabana is an incredible feeling, looking at everything going on, the smells and sounds. At least now you know what to expect on Copacabana beach.
